Lip Piercing

Are you considering getting a new facial piercing? Lip piercings are one of the most popular choices because there are so many different options!

Lips piercings are a great body modification choice because you can be artistic and experiment with the different styles. After ear and nose piercings, lip piercings are one of the most popular body piercing choices around the world.  There are lots of different places you can have pierced within this area including:

Labret Piercing - under the lip, just above the chin

Monroe and Madonna Piercings - above the lip on the left hand or right hand side

Medusa Piercing - just below the nose, right in the centre

Snake Bites Piercing - a pair of piercings close together on the bottom lip

There are many more to choose from than are listed above including spider bites, angel bites, cyber bites and shark bites! Discuss the options with your piercer and decide what's best for you.  Lip piercings are reported to be one of the least painful times of body modification, which is probably one of the reasons why they are so popular.  It is important to remember that piercing pain is always entirely subjective and that each individual will have a different experience of the amount of pain caused by a lip piercing.

Healing:  Lip piercings usually have one of the fastest healing processes. They typically only take 6 - 8 weeks to heal, but this can vary depending on the location and style of the lip piercing.

To help make the healing process fast and efficient, it's important to:
Clean both sides of the piercing using a salt solution
Have a dental check-up to ensure the jewellery is not compromising the health of your teeth
Rinse your mouth with a non-iodised sea salt and water mixture 4 - 5 times a day, after meals and before bed. Don't clean more often than this as you could hinder the healing process
Avoid mouthwash containing alcohol
Avoid soap or, if used, rinse thoroughly
It is completely normal to experience swelling, light bleeding, bruising or tenderness during the first five days of the healing process. You may also experience some secretion of white/yellow fluid which is completely fine. However, if you notice any pus, seek advice from your piercer.  Lip piercings can shrink or close really quickly so keep the jewellery in if you want to keep the piercing. But with all the lip piercing style options available, we're sure that you will want to keep your jewellery in!
Jewellery:  Your jewellery choice will vary depending on the type of lip piercing you go for. For example, if you choose the labret piercing then a coloured labret would look cool or if you go for the spider bites you might opt for two silver lip studs or two coloured BCRs.
