Lip piercings are one of the most popular choices because there are so many different options. Lip piercings are a great body modification choice because you can be artistic and experiment with the different placements. There are many more to choose from than those shown above, above including spider bites, angel bites, cyber bites and shark bites. Discuss the options with your piercer and decide what's best for you.

Will it hurt? Lip piercings are reported to be one of the least painful piercings, which is probably one of the reasons why they are so popular.  It is important to remember that piercing pain is always entirely subjective and that each individual will have a different experience of the amount of pain caused by a lip piercing, placement also matters as well as your own body. The procedure should only take a minute to do which most people find quite reassuring. The level of pain, as always, depends on your pain threshold and also sometimes upon the thickness of your lip. The lip can be a sensitive area due to nerves located in the area, but it varies from person to person and you can take comfort in the fact that this type of piercing is really quick.

Healing:  Lip piercings usually have one of the fastest healing processes. They typically only take 6 - 8 weeks to heal, but this can vary depending on the location and style of the lip piercing. Lip piercings can shrink or close really quickly so keep the jewellery in at all times if you want to keep the piercing.

When caring for your Lip piercing, ensure that you:

  • Use a gentle mouthwash or saltwater soaks to maintain good dental hygiene
  • Refrain from touching the piercing to allow the tender tissue to heal and to reduce the risk of inflammation and pain.
  • Clean both holes of your piercing twice a day.
  • The jewellery must be kept in at all times or you can risk the piercing closing over.
  • Rinse your mouth with mouth wash or a non-iodised sea salt and water mixture.
  • Clean the outside of your piercing twice a day with recommended aftercare product..
Avoid eating any spicy foods as this could irritate the piercing
  • Don't smoke or drink alcohol as this could make your healing time last a lot longer
  • Don't apply any cosmetics to this area to avoid any irritation
  • Don't fiddle with the piercing and make sure your hands are clean when you touch the piercing.
  • Regularly check the threaded end of the jewellery for tightness due to how much we move our lips,

You can dramatically reduce your risk of any problems by following this advice.
