Also known as a scrumper piercing, the smiley piercing passes through the upper lip frenulum, which connects the lip to the gums. Perfect for anyone seeking a 'secret' piercing, the smiley piercing is generally only visible when you smile (Hence the name!). It's important to remember that on some people, this piercing is always out of sight (No matter how broadly you smile!) and will only be visible if you physically lift up your lip with your finger. For others, the edge of this oral piercing may be visible whenever you open your mouth and as a result, would be very prominent when smiling. Personal anatomy can make the appearance of this piercing vary dramatically. Most recipients of this piercing report feeling little to no pain, though it's important to remember that this is anecdotal information as pain is entirely subjective.
Although the smiley piercing heals relatively quickly (Around 4-12 weeks), this piercing can be prone to rejection and migration. This is typically due to anatomical restrictions (Thinner frenulum tissue, shallow piercing etc), which your piercer will make you aware of prior to carrying out the piercing.
Aftercare of a smiley piercing is similar to other oral piercings. It's essential to:
Avoid smoking, alcohol or spicy foods initially so as not to irritate the piercing whilst it heals.
Use a PHP neutral mouthwash after meals and whenever you want to cleanse your piercing and a saline solution to keep your piercing clean.
Maintain proper oral hygiene (Cleaning your teeth twice a day, flossing etc).
Avoid kissing in the initial healing stages, as you can run the risk of contracting an infection or 'disturbing' the piercing site.
Avoid playing with your jewellery. As with all oral piercings, there is a danger of gum erosion and tooth decay unless you keep an eye on what your piercing is doing to the surrounding area inside your mouth.
If you experience discomfort or you notice a change in your gums (Receding, reddening etc) then you should return to your piercer or remove the piercing, as all effects could result in permanent and irreversible damage. It's also recommended to not get this piercing if you have braces or intend to get them in the near future, as the jewellery may get caught on the metalwork, posing a risk for injury or tearing.
Jewellery: Body jewellery for a smiley piercing usually involves a BCR or a circular barbell.
